Prices are continually rising, as indicated by the Labor Department’s latest report. The consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.4% on a monthly basis this February, which brings the annual rate of inflation to 6%. Core CPI increased by 0.5% on a monthly basis and 5.5% annually. Energy prices declining helped headline CPI figures after the sector declined by 0.6% for the month after fuel oil fell 7.9%. Food prices rose 9.5% annually and 0.4% since January, which is the lowest rise seen since December 2021. One-third of the index is driven by shelter costs. Shelter in the US is up 0.8% for the month and 8.1% annually, marking the fastest annual pace since June 1982.
