US/AMERICAS:

The US government will shut down at midnight on September 30 if Congress fails to pass spending legislation, with the House returning to work on September 12, leaving nearly three weeks to pass funding before the deadline. The White House and the leadership of the House and Senate support a stopgap measure to keep the government running, but far-right Republicans want to attach conditions that include a crackdown on undocumented immigration and a vote on an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The situation comes as the Federal Reserve is considering more interest rate hikes to combat inflation, which has been rising at a rapid pace.
