This is quite an extensive report with historical details of the numerous attempts to merge Canada with the United States, and there was previously a movement in Quebec calling itself the 51st State of the USA. Over the years, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and BC all entertained separating and joining the United States.  The analysis and timing models are very interesting, and Trump is by no means saying something totally out of the blue.
