In September 2023, the U.S. job market showed strong growth, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 336,000, surpassing the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 170,000. This growth was led by the leisure and hospitality sector, followed by government and healthcare. The unemployment rate stood at 3.8%, slightly higher than the forecasted 3.7%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% for the month and 4.2% from a year ago. In addition to the robust September numbers, the previous two months saw substantial upward revisions, with August’s gain revised to 227,000 and July’s to 236,000. The U.S. economy’s resilience in the face of higher interest rates, labor strife, and dysfunction in Washington is evident in this strong job growth, indicating a positive outlook for the country’s economic recovery.
